I loved Jim’s quiet and shy demeanor. I wanted to try to capture his character and the way he walked up Bennett’s High Island, thoughtfully and carefully, was the answer.
In the autumn in Newfoundland, you will see people off in fields, at the sides of roads, or on a hillside, picking berries. Cloud berries, partridge berries, blue berries…all of these are made into jam and preserves and remind me of Newfoundland. Milly Bragg was one such berry picker, and she posed for me on this hillside in the beautiful little village of Greenspond.

While I was staying at David Blackwood’s studio in Wesleyville, Newfoundland, his childhood friend Cyril took me out to visit some small islands in his family’s Sea Runner. He was such a kind man, with sparkling blue eyes.
